RESUMEN

To ensure the optimal living conditions of farm animals, it is essential to understand how their senses work and the way in which they perceive their environment. Most animals have a different hearing range compared to humans; thus, some aversive sounds may go unnoticed by caretakers. The auditory pathways may act through the nervous system on the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and immune systems. Therefore, noise may lead to behavioral activation (arousal), pain, and sleep disorders. Sounds on farms may be produced by machines, humans, or animals themselves. It is worth noting that vocalization may be very informative to the breeder as it is an expression of an emotional state. This information can be highly beneficial in maintaining a high level of livestock welfare. Moreover, understanding learning theory, conditioning, and the potential benefits of certain sounds can guide the deliberate use of techniques in farm management to reduce the aversiveness of certain events.

Behavioural indices are recognised as important criteria for assessing animal welfare. One of the basic animal behaviours included in ethograms is their activity. The assessment of fast-moving animals, performed by humans using the visual observation method, is difficult and not very objective. Therefore, the aim of the research was to develop a method of automated analysis of animal activity, particularly useful in the observation of quick and lively individuals, and to prove its suitability for assessing the behaviour of fast-moving animals. A method of automatically assessing animal activity was developed using digital image analysis, with the Python programming language and the OpenCV library being the foundational tools. The research model was Callimico goeldii monkeys housed in a zoological garden. This method has been proved to correlate well (Rs = 0.76) with the visual method of animal behaviour analysis. The developed automatic evaluation of animal behaviour is many times faster than visual analysis, and it enables precise assessment of the daily activity of fast-moving groups of animals. The use of this system makes it possible to obtain an activity index with sub-second resolution, which allows it to be used in online mode as a detector of abnormal animal activity, e.g. early detection of illnesses or sudden events that are manifested by increased or decreased activity in relation to the standard activity pattern.

The paper presents experimental research on hydrodynamic forces generated on a ship moored at a long quay wall, modeling the solid-type berth, by a passing ship. The proper prediction of interactions between the moored and passing ships is important for design and operational purposes. The results of the presented parametric study are presented as a space-time series of the forces as the functions of passing ship velocity and transverse separation distance between the ships. The experimental test setup constructed on the lake and the large scale of the manned physical ship models enabled a simulation of the real maneuvering situation. The force measurements were taken on the moored ship model fixed to the pantographs rigidly attached to the wall. The twin pantographs were attached to force sensors on the deck of the model by a system of movable joints, enabling the measurement of surge and sway forces. The presented method was verified based on available experimental and numerical data, showing a good agreement with the results.

Economic potential of the swine industry hinges upon the reproductive performance of sows, which may be enhanced by improving uterine capacity, a component trait of litter size and piglet productivity. Previous attempts at characterizing morphological traits indicative of high uterine volume have not been completely successful, resulting in the continued need for a reliable method of predicting reproductive value to improve production efficiency of the sow. Hence, the main objective of this study was to scrutinize macro- and micro-morphology of the sow's reproductive tract for quantitative correlations with fertility indices. Reproductive records from Polish Landrace × Polish Large White sows were used to examine the associations between fertility and ovarian/uterine morphology (n = 34) or uterine histomorphometry (n = 10). Several measures related to the ovary, including right and left ovarian weight (r = 0.50, p = 0.005 and r = 0.49, p = 0.006, respectively), were positively correlated with the litter size, while left ovarian number of corpora lutea (r = -0.38, p = 0.04) was negatively correlated with the mean litter size. Analysis of histomorphological characteristics of the uterine wall collected during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle revealed correlations between mean litter size and myometrial vascular content (r = 0.75, p = 0.03), the proportion of myometrial stroma (r = -0.68, p = 0.03), and the variability of endometrial thickness (r = -0.72, p = 0.02) in sows. Eight ovarian, vaginal and uterine characteristics were significantly correlated with mean lifetime numbers of live born and stillborn piglets/litter or the last litter size before slaughter. In conclusion, several anatomical and histomorphological metrics that relate to reproductive performance of swine may be used to inform production protocols and as a tool for selection of elite breeding sows, warranting future research into non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques for obtaining such measures.

Good husbandry conditions on farms is of key importance for assuring animal welfare. One of the most important legal documents regulating the rules of maintaining pigs is the Directive 2008/120/EC, which states that group-housed pigs should have access to litter or other materials that provide exploration and occupation. Released in 2016, the Commission Recommendation (EU) 2016/336 on the application of the Council Directive 2008/120/EC characterizes the various categories of materials that may be used to improve animal welfare. According to the document, straw is considered as an optimal material for pig housing, however, materials categorized as suboptimal (e.g., wood bark) and materials of marginal interest (e.g., plastic toys) are often used in practice and scientific research. As such, the aim of this paper is to review and systematize the current state of knowledge on the topic of the impact of environmental enrichment on pig welfare. This article raises mainly issues, such as the effectiveness of the use of various enrichment on the reduction of undesirable behavior-tail biting; aggression; and stereotypies at the pre-weaning, post-weaning, and fattening stage of pig production.

The length of the distal part of the internal reproductive tract seems to be related to the length and capacity of uterine horns, which is the most important anatomical property influencing litter size in sows. The aim of this study was to evaluate variation in vagina-cervix length (VCL) in gilts and differences in reproductive performance of sows according to VCL. The study was performed in a commercial farm using 221 gilts introduced into the breeding herd. Females were divided into three groups: (S) short (26.0 ± 2.0 cm, n = 36), (M) medium (31.3 ± 1.46 cm; n = 121), and (L) long VCL (36.0 ± 1.4 cm; n = 42) (p < 0.01). Mean live weight of gilts did not differ significantly among groups. Mean first litter size significantly varied between groups S (10.47 ± 3.01) and L (11.98 ± 2.32) (p = 0.0075) and M (10.67 ± 2.98) and L (p = 0.0054), while there was no significant difference between group S and M. Significant advantage (p = 0.023) was noted in the number of litters obtained from sows in groups L (4.69 ± 3.14), M (3.67 ± 2.71), and S (3.36 ± 2.40), and thus in total life production of sows (p = 0.0054), i.e., the number of piglets born alive. To conclude, the differences in vagina-cervix length in gilts during the first service was associated with significant variability in litter size during the first reproductive cycle, giving an advantage to females with longer VCL. Gilts with longer VCL were culled later and gave significantly more litters. Consequently, their lifetime piglet production was greater than gilts with shorter VCL.

The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of nanowater (NW; water declusterized using cold plasma treatment) as a diluent for a commercial boar semen extender during the 15-day storage (Days 1 to 15) at 16-18 °C. Ejaculates collected from 8 boars were subjected to the standard evaluation and then diluted in the extender prepared with deionized water (DW) or NW to a final concentration of 3×109 spermatozoa/ml. The proportion of defective spermatozoa increased (P<0.05) from Day 10 to Day 15 of storage (22.8±16.6% to 41.8±26.4% in DW group and 18.6±11.7% to 34.8±25.4% in NW group) and it was significantly greater in DW group compared with NW group on Days 5 and 10 due mainly to a greater (P<0.05) number of mid-piece defects in semen stored in the DW-containing extender. Sperm progressive motility decreased (P<0.05) in both groups between Days 2 and 6, Days 6 and 10, and Days 10 and 12, whereas the percentage of motile spermatozoa declined (P<0.05) to Day 14 only in NW group. Sperm motility was greater (P<0.05) in NW group compared with DW group from Day 5 to Day 13. A decline in sperm progressive motility below 40% in all semen samples occurred by Day 11 in DW group and by Day 12 in NW group. The mean survival time of sperm at 37 °C ex situ was greater in NW group than in DW group on Day 5 (314±87 min compared with 284±87 min) and Day 10 (223±34 min compared with 182±27 min; NW group compared with DW group, respectively). There were no differences (P>0.05) between the two groups in the concentrations of alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase in semen extender. To summarize, the use of NW as an extender diluent exerts cytoprotective effects on boar spermatozoa and delays a decline in sperm progressive motility.

Among the population over the age of 65 years joint diseases constitute more than 50% of chronic diseases and most often apply to the hip. Endoprosthetics is one of the methods for treating this condition and is considered one of the best--clinically and economically--interventions of the modern medicine. However, it is not free of complications among which the loosening of the endoprosthesis is commonest. In publications, a full discussion has been going on arguing whether the complication is caused by biological or mechanical factors. The authors--aiming to answer this question based on CT--tested the influence of the implantation of the acetabular component on the pelvic bone density in Hounsfield units within a 6-month period after the operation. The test results indicate the bone density decrease. The statistical analysis shows, however, that the changes are not statistically significant.

Follicular growth after antrum formation is determined by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Only two ways are possible for recruited follicles, continuing development or atresia. In gilts, intensive ovarian follicular growth begins between 60 and 100 days of age, and fluctuations of the ovarian morphological status last about 20 days; however, at that time there are no really large follicles. Final follicular development is under luteinising hormone (LH) control; this is why the attainment of puberty is related to an increase in serum oestradiol to a level that causes a preovulatory surge of this gonadotropin. The pool of follicles at the beginning of the oestrous cycle is about 30-40, most of which are small (< 3 mm) and growing. Then, the pool of follicles increases to about 80 in the mid-luteal phase but about 50 of them are small and 30 are medium sized (3-6.9 mm). Some of these follicles are in the growing phase, but some are atretic. Between days 7 and 15 of the oestrous cycle the percentage of atretic follicles fluctuates between 12 and 73%. At that time there are no large (> 7 mm) follicles because of the suppressing effect of progesterone. The number of small follicles declines after luteolysis. From the pool of medium follicles, large follicles are selected under the influence of LH, but about 70% of the medium-sized follicles become atretic. Because of the long-lasting selection process there is a significant heterogeneity in the diameter of large follicles in oestrus. However, the number of follicles correlates with the number of corpora lutea after ovulation. Individual follicular development and the relationship between follicles are still poorly known. The use of ultrasonography may give a closer insight into these phenomena.

RESUMEN

The authors have described case of patient suffering from Rendu-Osler-Weber Syndrome for many years, after many unsuccessful attempts to treat massive hemorrhages from the nose. This was what made them use maxillary artery embolisation method. It was done using Seldinger technique. Radiologic visualisation of blood vessels was obtained by use of C-arm. The use of this method in that case has been successful so far. According to authors opinion embolisation of maxillary arteries is an effective alternative in treating recurring hemorrhages in patients with Rendu-Osler-Weber Syndrome.
